4:00 AM – Depart from Your Accommodation
Arrange a 4×4 taxi to take you to the Back Door Trailhead (Umm Sayhoun or Little Petra).The drive takes about 30 minutes from Wadi Musa
4:30 AM – Start the Hike via the Back Door Trail
The Back Door Trail is about 5 km (3 miles) and takes 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the Monastery Follow the well-marked path that winds through desert landscapes and rocky terrain The hike is moderate, with some elevation gain near the Monastery
6:00 AM – Arrive at the Monastery & Find a Sunrise Spot
Once at the Monastery (Ad Deir), find a good vantage point for sunrise.
A great spot is the ridge above the Monastery, offering panoramic views of Petra’s mountains.
6:30 AM – Experience the Sunrise
Watch as the sun slowly illuminates the golden sandstone cliffs.Enjoy the peaceful, uncrowded moment before the main Petra crowds arrive.Take photos, relax, and have a light snack or tea if you brought some
7:30 AM – Explore the Monastery
Walk around the Monastery and take in its massive 47m x 48m façade.If the Monastery café is open, grab a tea or coffee
8:00 AM – Descend into Petra’s Main Site
Hike down the 850 steps leading to the Colonnaded Street and Royal Tombs
Explore other key sites like
12:00 PM – Lunch & Exit via the Main Entrance
Stop for lunch at a restaurant inside Petra or head back to Wadi Musa.Consider hiring a donkey or camel if tired.
